About Tsitsikamma Toll Plaza
Tsitsikamma holds a distinguished place in South African road history as the location of the country's first modern toll road. When tolling began at the Tsitsikamma crossing in 1983, it pioneered the user-pays model for national road funding that SANRAL would later apply across the national road network. The Paul Sauer Bridge spanning the Storms River was an engineering landmark when completed in 1956, and the toll plaza was established here partly because the bridge and its gorge crossing represent a natural collection point. The Tsitsikamma National Park (now part of the Garden Route National Park) flanks the N2 at this point, making it also one of South Africa's most photographed toll plazas.
