Frequently asked questions

What is an APS score?

An APS (Admission Point Score) is a numerical value calculated from your National Senior Certificate (matric) results. It converts your percentage marks into points on a 1–7 scale and is used by South African universities to determine admission eligibility.

How is APS calculated?

Each subject is converted: 80–100% = 7, 70–79% = 6, 60–69% = 5, 50–59% = 4, 40–49% = 3, 30–39% = 2, 0–29% = 1. Your APS is the sum of your points across all subjects (usually excluding Life Orientation for most universities).

Does Life Orientation count towards APS?

It depends on the university. Some universities include Life Orientation at face value, some cap it at 4 points, and others exclude it entirely. Most APS requirements published by universities are based on 6 subjects excluding Life Orientation.

What is a good APS score?

A score of 30+ opens many BCom, BA, and general science programmes. 35+ opens engineering and law at most universities. 40+ is required for competitive programmes like medicine (MBChB) at UCT, Wits, UKZN, and Stellenbosch.
