About Machado Toll Plaza

The area around eMakhazeni has deep railway history — the Elandsberg rail pass through Waterval Boven was an engineering feat of the late 19th century, and the town of Machadodorp served as the seat of the Transvaal Republic government for a brief period during the Anglo-Boer War in 1900. The Machado plaza takes its name from the original Machadodorp station area. Beyond this toll, the N4 climbs the Mpumalanga escarpment before descending into the warm Lowveld toward Mbombela and Mozambique. TrAC's 30-year concession covers the entire SA section of the N4 east corridor from Pretoria to Komatipoort.
